Derek Andrew Wynne

I would like to submit a memorial on behalf of my son, Derek Andrew Wynne, who took his own life on 8th February 1997, following an undiagnosed head injury when he was knocked from his bike some weeks before.

Derek was a member of the 33rd Dublin Sandford Scout Group, which is part of the Scout Association of Ireland, where he had gone right through from Beavers to Venture Scouts, and had served for 3 years as a Cub Scout Instructor and Assistant Leader. His last major activity was to take part in the Venture Scout Levey Trophy in October, 96. He enjoyed hill walking, rock climbing and camping and had attended and enjoyed the 50th Scottish International Patrol Jamborette in Blair Atholl in '96.

He had attended Sandford Parish National School and subsequently, the High School in Dublin. From there he had traveled, as a member of the Irish delegation, to the European Youth Parliament in Milan in November 1995.

On leaving second level education he went to Trinity College, Dublin, where he studied Engineering, was as busy as possible, and was very happy. He took an active part in college life, reaching the semi-finals of the 'Maiden Speakers' competition in the 'Hist', the premier debating society in Trinity College. He took on fencing and rifle-shooting for the first time and made good progress. He was a member of 'Young Fine Gael' and talked about running for the position of Secretary of this political group. He enjoyed membership of Gamers and of the Science Fiction Society.

I enclose a photo of him just getting ready to go climbing with his friends. (to be added)

Yours in the International Fellowship of Guiding and Scouting,

David J Wynne, Dublin, Ireland.
