Pete Gregory
Pete's son Steven has become a
Boy Scout after finishing his Webelos and Arrow of Light. Pete was a bit
different in appearance than the rest of us. He wore his hair long and
scraggley and so was his beard.
He worked with his family building
shipping pallets. However, his passion was stock car racing. He
was the only race car driver that I have known. He spent much of his time getting
his car ready to run the next race and he worked on some cars. Pete's
hands were stained with automobile grease.
One weekend we invited the fathers
to go camping with us. He was so happy to go with us. That night
at the campfire after everyone had gone to bed, Pete and I sat up and got to
know each other. We became dear friends. Often he would help me with problems
with a car.
I asked Pete if he would like to
become an Assistant Scoutmaster. He agreed after some encouraging. Pete was
at every meeting he could attend. He loved high adventure and he learned
climbing and repelling. He was planning to attend a COPE course when he died
in an unnecessary automobile accident.
Pete and friends had been to a NASCAR
race at Rockingham. They were on their way home when their van was hit
by a drunk driver. Pete left a beautiful family of a wife, a son, a daughter,
a mother, and wonderful brothers. Steven earned his Eagle Scout Award
and attends North Carolina State University just as Pete had hoped.
